Lucy May in a ‘Whirlwind’ with new single, EP and album

Apologies for the bad pun in the title, but the fact is that 2015 looks to be a big year for country-rock songwriter Lucy May. The track above is the lead single and title track from new EP ‘Whirlwind’, which is also set to share a title with an album coming in a couple of months’ time.

The EP comes first, on March 9th, and should serve as a really nice introduction to this new UK artist. Already picking up some plaudits with the BBC, May has spent time in the USA (Nashville and New York) honing her love for her genre and learning from some of the best artists in the world.

Impressively, all this progress has been made on her own dime, holding down two jobs to remain fiercely independent and make sure she stays true to her own musical identity. At the moment she’s releasing her music through Absolute Recordings (also independent), and it looks set to stay that way as this approach offers true artistic freedom. Sometimes this approach acts as shorthand for music that’s less accessible, but in Lucy May’s case it’s certainly not a case that labels wouldn’t be interested in her. It’s just she’s not necessarily interested in them.

That’s an admirable approach, and speaks to her passion for the work she’s doing. With any luck, it will get her noticed.
