#MusicalMemories – Misunderstood

Shout out to any 90s children – we have just discovered your new favourite band! While the last few years have been dominated by 80s inspired outfits, London duo Misunderstood channel Ultimate Kaos, Kriss Kross, Missy Elliott, Jodeci and Busta Rhymes. So press play and jump around as your inner child wishes! And while you do, try focus just enough to see what songs have meant something to the boys behind the music – Stephan and Jeffrey…

What song reminds you most of your childhood?

J: Jade – ‘Don’t Walk Away’ as my Mum had that song on all the time!

S: Aaliyah – ‘Rock The Boat’. I don’t even know how but over time I hear this song I get that feeling.

Which song inspired you to become a musician/singer?

J: I can’t say if there was a song but for me it was definitely Michael Jackson, my earliest memory was watching his Moonwalker film and learning all the songs, dance moves and even the lines!

S: I would have to say the same as Jeffrey, I can’t pinpoint a certain song but remember watching films like ‘Oliver Twist’, ‘Annie’, ‘You Got Served’ and ‘Sister Act 2’ to name a few and absolutely falling in love with the way they infused music and dance.

Which song do you wish you had written?

J: Mine would be “If I Were A Boy” by Beyonce. I admired the writing on it and remember when I first heard it and was like “why didn’t I think of this!” I love how its talking about switching rolls and speaking on situations and examples of our everyday behaviours in or out of relationships. Bey kills it vocally which also adds that special something to it!

S: Mine would have to be ‘Quiet’ from Matilda the Musical. Every time I listen to this song I cry. I think it just sums up my childhood as a whole it’s so beautifully written.

Which artist/band has been the most inspirational to you?

J: There are so many incredible artists that we look up to and that have influenced us individually and as a group. For me personally it would have to be Michael Jackson. He changed the worlds perception of how music, dance and videos should be received-he was such a game changer and a great performer!

S: For me Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliott and Brandy. All these artists taught me the importance of creativity, vocals, performance and being yourself.

Which song/album currently dominates your attention?

S: I would have to say Beyonce ‘Lemonade’. I listen to these songs every single day. The way she tells a story and pulls inspiration from different cultures and instrumentation to bring it to life I think is incredible.

J: I love Bruno Mars and his latest project! He has the best jams that just make you want to get up and dance; ‘Chunky’ and ’24k Magic’ are such great throwback joints but still have that current sound.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Both: Beyonce!
