With support from the well-regarded likes of Jim Gellatly and other tastemakers in Scotland, it’s clear that songwriter Rachel Alice Johnson is already picking up some momentum in her homeland. Her latest release is EP ‘2am’, which is out now and shows perhaps a more adult side than we have seen from Johnson previously.
This approach is typified by lead single ‘Lights On’. Explicit in terms of both language and meaning, it makes an impact in several ways. First, those lyrics leave little to interpretation. But the fact that they’re backed by the smart, minimalist instrumentation of pounding drums, scuzzy bass and little else gives this a true underground vibe.
